Disability Services - Overview
Register with the Houston Barber School Disability Services
If you are a student with a disability, medical condition, or injury that affects your ability to fully access your courses and the course material, you may be eligible for academic accommodations. This includes both long-standing and recently diagnosed conditions.
Accommodations at the college level are not automatic and must be requested through the Houston Barber School, which means the student is required to self-disclose their disability to the extent they are seeking accommodations. Our team will work with students to review documentation, understand their needs, and determine appropriate, course-specific accommodations.
Note for students transitioning from K-12 setting:
College and University accommodations follow a different process than in K–12. While we understand that many students received support through an IEP or 504 Plan, those documents do not automatically transfer to the University setting. Additionally, under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), students manage their own educational records, so communication and decisions about accommodations must be student-led. Our office is here to support you as you navigate this transition and take the lead in your accommodation process.
Process for Accessing Accommodations Services
Steps to Request Accommodations at Houston Barber School
- Be Admitted and Enrolled in Classes
You must be officially admitted to HBS and registered for courses before accommodations can be finalized. Accommodations are designed to meet the specific requirements of each class.
- Complete the Student Questionnaire
Fill out the intake questionnaire provided by HBS. This helps us understand your needs and the types of accommodations you’re requesting. - Submit Documentation
Provide current documentation from a qualified professional that describes your disability and how it impacts your academic experience. This information helps us determine appropriate and reasonable accommodations.
- Attend an Intake Meeting
Schedule and attend a one-on-one intake meeting with HBS. During this meeting, we’ll review your materials, answer questions, and create a course-specific accommodation plan tailored to your needs.
If there are any changes to your condition, new concerns in your courses, or updated documentation, please reach out. We’re happy to review and update your plan as needed.
Please Note:
The accommodation process may take up to 10 business days to complete once all required materials have been submitted. Processing may be faster for students enrolled in short or compressed-format classes.
Service packets are reviewed on a case-by-case basis, and incomplete submissions may delay the evaluation process. To avoid delays, please ensure your intake form, documentation, and any required materials are submitted promptly.
