HEERF CARES Act Information

Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund Formula Grants Authorized by Section 18004(a)(1) of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act Reserve Funds Sections 18004(a)(1) and 18004(c) of the CARES Act, Pub. L. No. 116-136 (March 27, 2020).

Authorized the Secretary of Education ("Secretary") to allocate an institutional and student portion of grant funds allowed Houston Barber School to use up to 50 percent of the funds received to cover any costs associated with significant changes to the delivery of instruction due to the coronavirus, so long as such costs do not include payment to contractors for the provision of pre-enrollment recruitment activities, including marketing and advertising; endowments; or capital outlays associated with facilities related to athletics, sectarian instruction, or religious worship (collectively referred to as "Recipient’s Institutional Costs"). Section 18004(c) also requires Houston Barber School to use no less than fifty percent of the funds received to provide emergency financial aid grants to students for expenses related to the disruption of campus operations due to the coronavirus (including eligible expenses under a student’s cost of attendance such as food, housing, course materials, technology, health care, and childcare).

    Each student will receive a grant amounting to $450.00. This amount was calculated by dividing the total grant amount received for the Student Aid Portion and dividing it equally by the number of students enrolled as of grant application date.

  • Any instructions, directions or guidance provided by the institution to students concerning the emergency financial aid grants:

    Upon receipt of grant payment, each student was provided a letter which indicated the purpose of the grant, its intended use and that the funds received is a grant and does not have to be repaid.
